Question by : What will happen if Hurricane Irene hits during my cruise?
Hurricane Irene is supposed to hit Boston around Sunday, which is where my ship leaves out of. I’m leaving on Friday, so hopefully I’ll miss that, but the predictions say that the hurricane could veer out to sea. If the hurricane is on the path of my ship, what will happen?
Are they going to cancel it in advance? If the water and wind are rough, will we not be able to go out on the deck? Is it going to be scary/will you feel the waves a lot?

You will get kind of wet.

If it gets really bad they will probably delay it
I don’t know what cruise line you will be one but usually cruise ships are very big and you will be fine, you can still go out on deck and enjoy the covered areas. The cruise ship will most likely try to navigate away from the storm. If you have ports of call they would try to find other ports of call if necessary and at worst you may spend the day at sea instead. They try very hard not to cancel the cruise but they may delay for a few hours.
Your cruise line will wait until we have a better idea of where the storm is going. Then they will decide what to do. They probably just leave on Friday and go further out and around the storm.
They will post any updates or last minuite changes on their website so watch for them.
Ships are equipped with very good weather tracking systems. The Captain will alter course as needed to keep his passengers, crew, and ship out of harm’s way.
That being said, it is still possible you will encounter some windy weather and rough seas. They WILL close off the decks if it’s not safe to be out there.
The only reason they would cancel the cruise would be if they could not get the ship in and out of Boston safely before the storm hit. Given the current projections, that will not be the case.
